Boons place is a residential block located centrally in Plymouth and close to the city centre and main train station. The block consists of one- and two-bedroom apartments owned by Plymouth Community Homes. The project was part of a major decarbonisation within the city and focus to deliver lower energy consumption for occupants by delivering a highly efficient building fabric.
Plymouth Community Homes selected Alsecoo Ecomin 300 system with a silicon 1.5mm topcoat due to its durability and aesthetics.
The Solution
Bell Group were awarded the project as main contractor and chose to partner with BuildX (SW) Ltd due to their experience of over 25 years within the EWI industry. They contracted the full external work packages to consist of
- Cavity extraction and refill
- EWI system (supply and install)
- Fascia & Soffits
- Enabling works
Works Required
- Remove damp and failed mineral wool cavity wall insulation and dry out, replace with Therma bead cavity wall insulation.
- Cut off concrete window surrounds to avoid any thermal bridging
- Façade repairs prior to EWI
- Instal ecomin 300 EWI system
Before and after images:
1: The client had requested that the three gable ends were left as original brickwork, BuildX suggested this be changed to EWI for the thermal efficiency of the building and the benefit to the residents that would be gained.
2: Due to various leaseholders within the block who wouldn’t pay for the gas flues to be extended or replaced, the client and main contractor were unsure how to proceed without impacting the main scheme and the appearance of the works. BuildX investigated this and although there wasn’t anything to avoid the thermal impact, they did propose and work with Alsecco to compile the below solution.
3: The balconies were not as proposed when external failed timbers and insulation was removed. BuildX proposed the below system and worked with a structural engineer to approve. The balconies could then be rendered in to make a feature
